The Florida Keys are home to the third-largest barrier reef in the world. Your guide will take you through this remarkable underwater ecosystem and bring it all to life.
Our Amazing Vandenberg Dive
The lower keys have more shipwrecks per square mile than nearly any other dive destination in the United States. Some of the wrecks were intentionally scuttled to form artificial reefs, while others simply had an unlucky day and ended up on the bottom. Most popular of them all is the USS Vandenberg, a World War II troop transport ship that was repurposed after the war to become a U.S. Air Force missile tracking vessel.
In 2009, the Vandenberg was sunk seven miles off of Key West where she now rests 141 feet down. The scuttling operation went to great lengths in making sure the ship settled on the seafloor in an upright position. Her superstructure rises to within 50 feet of the surface, making the wreck accessible to nearly all levels of Key West scuba diving.
The Vandenberg is the second-largest artificial reef in the world, so you may want to schedule more than one dive trip in order to explore it all. Some dive operators make a different wreck dive mornings and afternoons.
